Are you looking for some seriously spooky caves and waterfalls on an action packed easy hike near Pirmasens, Germany?
I found this hike in the lovely Fred and Otto book and it’s a total hidden gem! It’s really great for families with kids or people who want shorter hikes that are action packed with food at the end.
Author’s tl;dr: The hike is an easy loop with spooky red sandstone caves and at least 5 waterfalls that are truly impressive.
Dog friendly, kid-friendly 4+.
4.22 miles and mainly leaf carpeted soft trails. You can shorten it if needed and just hit the waterfalls in less than 2 miles. If you want to make a weekend of it, you can stay directly on trail at the pension Naturfrendehaus or the FEWO apartment near the village.
❌ Do not do this hike if you are anti-occult. j/k, it is super witchy tho…
Located about 5 min from Pirmasens, Germany this Pfalzerwald forest hike offers more waterfalls than the nearby Dahn Germany hike or the Hexenklamm hike.
- What I really loved were the multitude of waterfall caves.
- What I thought was rough was the mud along the bottom of trail.

Hike – My Experience
Bonus: Waterfalls Galore
My dog Ruby and I hiked it on a rainy day in February and we were surprised how many sights there are in such a short hike
What’s really cool is that non-hikers in your group can also see the waterfalls with a short walk and you can all meet up at the restaurant.

Parking Lot – Haspelfels – Huhnerfels (:45)
Okay this hike starts off walking past the Naturfrendhaus alongside some ponds. You’ll follow the devil’s sign uphill to the right.
You’ll immediately be rewarded after a short climb with a massive red cave you can hike THROUGH! There are free flowing watefalls and I loved walking under the water.
You’ll continue on leaf carpeted, and ivy draped single track with many red rock formations. Once you reach Huhnerfels, definitely take some time to sit at the picnic table next to the 40 foot high free flowing waterfall.
Huhnerfels – Teufelsbrunnen – Teufelsfelsen (1:20)
I would not wear uggs on the this hike as it can get muddy on the next section. You’ll pass by more waterfalls and then zizzag up a giant pine forested hill.
Then you’ll get to the “farm” stretch. There’s an alternative parking area here on this side and you can also detour to the 3 books hut.
Upon returning north, you’ll first pass the Teufelsbrunnen and then the Teufelsfelsen.
They are pretty close to the original ponds where we started.
Teufelsfelsen – Parking (1:45)
It’s pretty much a straight shot on a wide path here back to parking. You’ll simply be on the other side of the lake.

Where to Stay
Half Timbered Hotel 👉 FeWo Pfälzer Felsenlandschaft
Just at the beginning of the trail is the family-owned apartment called Fewo. The owner is really sweet and the rooms look great.
I’ve not stayed here yet but it’s on my bucketlist so I can catch the waterfalls at sunset and walk back to hotel.
It’s got “local vibes” and a ton of space. I love anything half-timbered. You can also walk to restaurants from here easily.
