Rietburgbahn Edenkoben
This chairlift is gentle and slow all the way up to the Rietburg castle restaurant and the deer park on top. We went in winter while they were doing maintenance so didn’t get to ride unfortunately. Next time I want to stay in the spa hotel at the bottom and hike all day before going back to their gourmet restaurants on site.

As you sit comfortably in the chairlift, you are gently whisked up the hillside from the valley near the historic Villa Ludwigshöhe, a former Bavarian royal palace, towards the Rietburg ruins.

Reaching the castle ruins is both a journey back in time and an opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views. Constructed around 1200, the Rietburg has witnessed centuries of history.

History and Culture

There is a new ‘drawbridge’ and a swing underneath. This area is meant for chillin….

When you explore the Rietburgbahn Edenkoben, you’re immersing yourself in a historical experience that connects you to Germany’s rich cultural heritage, specifically within the Rhineland-Palatinate region. This section aims to provide you with an understanding of the historical backdrop and why it’s a significant fixture in the local landscape.

Rietburg Castle

Rietburg Castle, perched above the small town of Edenkoben, stands as a symbol of the region’s medieval history. Originally built around the 12th century, this castle today exists as an evocative ruin, whispering tales of bygone eras to visitors.

While it was once part of a network of defensive strongholds, the castle now offers a place of contemplation and historical discovery, having seen over 70 years since its post-war restoration efforts began.

Weinbaugebiet Deutschlands

This area is not only known for its historical sites but also as an integral part of the Weinbaugebiet Deutschlands, or the wine-growing region of Germany.

The fertile lands along the Rhine, including those seen from the Rietburgbahn, contribute significantly to the viticulture tradition that spans centuries, deeply entwined with the economic and cultural identity of cities like Speyer, Worms, and the Odenwald region.

As you savor a glass of local wine, you’re actually tasting the fruit of ancient Roman vineyards, cultivated over millennia, and perfected in your time.
