My Unbiased Review of the Exped Megamat Duo 10 and Opinions on Sleep Quality (Including Video).

Recently, I purchased the Exped Megamat Duo 10 Air Mattress and I’m excited to share my experience with you. I splurged on it because it fits perfectly in my VW Atlas.

With the middle and 3rd row folded down it’s the perfect place to sleep when all the campsites are full, or I’m just being budget-minded (aka: cheap)~!

Let’s be clear – the mattress is not cheap. (But compared to high season hotels by national parks, it’s no contest.)

I used to have a love-hate relationship with camping. I never can get comfy on a thin air mattress on the ground and I hate planning months in advance for cool campgrounds.

This whole “sleeping in your SUV” thing is offering opportunities for more camping experiences.

As a physical therapist, I know the importance of a good night’s sleep for me to be able to actually enjoy my hikes.

So while I might be excited to save money on a camping spot, I do not believe in sacrificing sleep and that’s why I’m always on the lookout for gear that will enable a good night’s rest.

And let me tell you, the Exped Megamat Duo 10 is a product that does just that, it’s one of the very best pads for side sleepers.

Youtube Megamat Duo 10 Review

I bought it in December and we tested it at a German cornhole tournament where we slept on the gym floor.  Watch the entire review and what it’s like to wake refreshed even sleeping on the gym floor.

My Honest Take: Who it’s Good for and Not

After spending several nights on the Exped MegaMat Duo 10, I can confidently say that it is one of the most comfortable camping mattresses on the market.

The Megamat Duo 10 is a luxurious double-wide sleeping pad that’s designed to accommodate two people for warm, cozy car camping.

It provides ample space for two people to sleep comfortably, holds the air extremely well, and the self-inflating feature makes it incredibly easy to set up and the top entry storage back makes it easy to pack away.

Before I dive into the details of my experience with the Megamat Duo 10, let me give you a quick overview of what this camping mattress is all about.

✅ It’s made with high-quality materials and features a self-inflating design that makes it easy to set up and use.

✅ Great for 2 people.

✅ With a thickness of 10 centimeters and an R-value of 8.1, this mattress is designed to provide maximum comfort and warmth, even in cold weather.

In this review, I’ll provide an honest opinion about the mattress and how it helped me get a good night’s sleep before hitting the trails.

While I believe it’s a great value, some may find the price to be very high. I cannot tell you that it’s the best for everyone.

❌ If you are a tummy sleeper or find it easy to fall asleep directly on the ground — than this is totally overkill for you. But if you are more of a side sleeper or have sensitive hips, this may be a solution for you to more fully enjoy the outdoors.

❌ Dog nails. Not sure about how it will hold up to my dog sleeping with me on it.

Exped Mattress Insulation

Super Insulated – 8.1 R Value

The MegaMat Duo 10 is also impressively warm at 8.1 R-Value, which is a huge plus for camping in colder temperatures.

I appreciated the thickness of the pad, which is great cushion for SIDE SLEEPERS and provided excellent support for my back.

While the MegaMat Duo 10 is certainly on the pricier side, I believe it is worth the investment for those who prioritize comfort and convenience when camping.

It is a reliable and high-quality product that I would highly recommend to anyone in the market for a new camping mattress.

❌ This is NOT for backpacking. It’s far too large and heavy to be portable.

✅ It’s great for sleeping inside your SUV or inside a tent.

It is so comfortable, I’d also use it for extra guests to sleep on the floor at my house in a pinch. It’s more comfy than the $1000 Japanese “futon” I bought for “natural” sleeping on the floor. (I’ve made some bad purchases, for sure.)

My Experience with the Exped Megamat Duo 10

Unpacking and Setting Up

When I received the Swiss-designed Exped Megamat Duo 10, I was impressed with how compact it was for such a large sleeping pad.

The package included a top loading roll-top stuff sack, which made it easy to carry. It’s tough and durable and can double to carry things around the campsite if needed.  It has a nice shoulder sling.

❌ Setting up the pad took longer than expected. Especially the first time, it takes at least an hour to fill.

✅ I was happy to see that it came with a repair kit, just in case of any mishaps or my golden doodle’s nails puncture it.

Comfort and Support

Seriously, this is strangely comfortable and awesome to just get up and go for the weekend without doing much planning first.

It’s such a bummer to have to plan camping sites months in advance, but the SUV can be parked in any legal parking spot.

The Exped Megamat Duo 10 provided the most comfortable sleep I have ever had while sleeping on the floor.

It doesn’t have the feel of an “air mattress” at all. There’s no bouncing around, slow deflation overnight or weird sounds every time you flip over.

The foam and air combination made it feel like I was sleeping on a real bed. The pad’s 4 inch thickness provided excellent support for my back and hips, and I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Insulation and Warmth

I was initially worried about the pad’s insulation and warmth, as I tend to get cold easily. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how warm the pad kept me throughout the night.

The pad’s R-value of 8.1 provided excellent insulation, and I didn’t wake up shivering once.

Portability and Storage

The Exped Megamat Duo 10 is a large sleeping pad, but it’s surprisingly easy to pack up and store.

The included stuff sack made it easy to carry, and it didn’t take up too much space in my car. It took about 10 minutes to deflate it and roll it up to stow in the roll-top SideWinder bag.

Pros and Cons

The Exped Megamat Duo 10 is an excellent choice for couples or individuals who want a comfortable and spacious camping mattress.

While it does have a few drawbacks, in my experience the pros of this mattress far outweigh the cons, making it a great investment for anyone who wants a REALLY GOOD night’s sleep while camping.

However, it may not be right for your circumstance and may be overkill if you sleep easily on the ground.

Deep Dive Features and Specifications

R-Value and Temperature Rating

The Exped MegaMat Duo 10 sleeping pad is designed to provide exceptional warmth and comfort in cold weather conditions.

With an R-value of 8.1, this sleeping pad can withstand temperatures as low as -40°F, making it an ideal choice for winter camping trips.

The pad’s insulation is made of open-cell foam, which traps warm air and prevents heat loss.

Size and Dimensions

The MegaMat Duo 10 is a double-wide sleeping pad that measures 72 x 41 x 4 inches, providing ample space for two people to sleep comfortably.

The pad’s dimensions are large enough to fit most two-person tents, making it an excellent choice for basecamp or car camping trips. It’s 41 inches wide and perfect for fitting inside an SUV also.

⭐️ The pad is also available in a Long Wide Double (LW+) size for taller campers and Queen for more width if you plan to use it only inside a tent.

Weight

The Exped MegaMat Duo 10 is a heavy sleeping pad, with a weight of 7 lbs. 8 oz. This makes it less suitable for backpacking trips, but its weight is compensated by its exceptional comfort and warmth.

The larger sizes are more heavy, refer to chart above.

Materials and Durability

The MegaMat Duo 10 is made of high-quality materials that ensure its durability and longevity. The pad’s top and bottom layers are made of 75D polyester, which is both abrasion-resistant and puncture-resistant.

Exped pads have insulation made of open-cell foam, which is highly resilient and can withstand repeated use without losing its shape or effectiveness.

Inflation and Deflation

The Exped MegaMat Duo 10 features an efficient inflation and deflation system that makes it easy to set up and take down.

The pad comes with a built-in hand pump that allows you to inflate it quickly and easily. The pad also features a large deflation valve that allows you to release air quickly and efficiently when it’s time to pack up.

Valve System

The values are insanely good.

The Exped duo sleeping pad features a unique FlatValve technology that allows for easy inflation and deflation with 2 separate valves.

The inflate valve is located on the side of the pad and is easy to access, even when the pad is fully inflated.

The valve also features a one-way design that prevents air from escaping during inflation, ensuring a quick and efficient setup process.

Mini-Pump

It’s a tad slow, but only for fine-tuning the firmness.

Using a mini pump with an exped air mattress is a convenient and efficient way to top off the self-inflating exped mats, and it is an essential accessory for anyone who wants to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep while camping or backpacking.

With its compact size and lightweight design, the mini pump is easy to carry and store.

It is quite slow however when using it.  As the pad is self-inflating, you really only need to add a tiny bit at the end if you like a firm surface.

When it comes to camping mattresses, there are a lot of options out there. However, the exped megamat duo 10 sleeping pad stands out as one of the most comfortable and high-quality options on the market. Here, we’ll compare it to a few similar products to see how it stacks up.

1. Nemo Roamer Double

The Nemo Roamer Double is another popular camping mattress that offers a similar level of comfort and insulation as the Exped Megamat Duo 10. However, there are a few key differences to note.

Firstly, the Roamer Double is slightly wider than the Megamat Duo 10, measuring in at 78” x 52”. Additionally, it is the same height of 4 inches.

The R-value is 6.0, making it not quite as good for cold weather.  While the Roamer Double is still a great option, those who prioritize maximum comfort and space may prefer the Megamat Duo 10.

2. Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D

The Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D is another camping mattress that offers a high level of comfort and insulation. Like the Megamat Duo 10, it measures in at 77” x 25”, making it a good option for taller individuals or couples who want to sleep side-by-side.

However, the MondoKing 3D is slightly thinner than the Megamat Duo 10, with a height of 3.75 inches.

Additionally, it is not self-inflating like the Megamat Duo 10, which may be a drawback for some users.

Overall, the MondoKing 3D is a good option for those who prioritize comfort and don’t mind spending a bit more time inflating their mattress manually.

3. Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad – Double

The Sea to Summit Comfort Plus is another double mattress option that still offers a decent level of comfort and insulation.

However, it is not quite as luxurious as the Megamat Duo 10. It measures in at 72” x 50”, making it a bit narrower than the Megamat Duo 10. Additionally, it is only 3.0 inches thick, which may not be quite enough for those who want maximum comfort.

That being said, the Sea to Summit 3.5 is still a solid option for those who want a comfortable camping mattress.
