The Black Diamond Storm 400 HEADLAMP is a versatile and reliable option (after my incident at Mt. Toubkal, I know reliability is key!). However, it didn’t last for quite as long in testing, so I’d always pack a spare set of batteries, just in case.
The PowerTap Technology is pretty handy; it allows you to easily transition between full and dimmed power, making it so easy to adjust the brightness. It’s also compact, and I found it really comfy to wear, even for those longer trips.
This headlamp has some very helpful settings, including proximity and distance modes, dimming, strobe, red, green and blue night-vision, and lock mode. The waterproof and dustproof housing also means it’s durable, and protected from any weather conditions blown your way.
The latch can be a little fiddly, but I got used to it – it has a knack. And although it’s comfy, it might be a little heavy for some.
Overall though, a quality headlamp at a very good price, and very worthy of my Best Overall topspot.

Cons
- Might not be suitable for long-term use, as the battery life might not last as long as expected.
- Waterproof feature not the best.
- On the heavy side, weighing 1.76 ounces.
I mentioned earlier that you should pack two headlamps if you can – and this headlamp’s price tag makes it much more reasonable to do so. Its rechargeable battery is really helpful, too; you can charge and turn on the light at the same time!
My favorite feature here is the Motion Sensor. With the wave of your hand you can turn your light on and off, which is noticeably convenient when you’re working at those inclines. The headlamp also has a unique magnet function that can be attached anywhere magnetic. I used this to hold it up to light an entire area to set up camp.
The battery life isn’t as long-lasting as some of the others, but this is expected when you’re on a budget-friendly option. It’s also probably not the best for extreme weather conditions. It’s not particularly lightweight either, at 1.76 ounces – so overall not the best headlamp if you’re planning longer hikes and climbs.

The headlamp also offers a wide range of outputs and lighting modes, to get the brightness level just right. The rechargeable battery is a convenient and eco-friendly feature, and the headlamp is compatible with a variety of helmets and mounts.
This technology does come at a weight though, however I think we can agree this is almost expected from most headlamps. But if you’re looking to minimize your gear weight, this headlamp isn’t the lightest.
And although it’s waterproof, its IP66 rating only protects it from heavy rain and water jets. It’s not your most budget-friendly headlamp either, but it offers some key features that could certainly be worth investing in.

I love the Fenix HM65R Headlamp – it really is a quality headlamp, especially if you want plenty of visual aid. The dual beam is incredibly bright and can reach long distances, making it ideal for exploring in the dark.
It’s also built very well. The lightweight magnesium alloy frame is 32% lighter than aluminum, yet still just as durable. It’s also IP68 waterproof to withstand harsh conditions, and it’s and impact resistant up to 2 meters, passing a drop test from 6 different sides.
You also get a USB rechargeable battery, which is really helpful and easy to use.
Although the frame is as lightweight as it can be, it still may be a little heavy for some, especially after extended use. The battery life can be a problem when using the high power mode too. Also, the reflective strap is not very durable and may wear out over time.
But when it’s fully charged and in its prime, this headlamp is amazing.
