Are you curious about the Via Transilvanica trail markers that line this 1400 km hike in Romania? (You’re going to want to give your internet a minute to load.)
The Via Transilvanica trail markers will blow your mind.
As a hiker, I love the opportunity to mix up Culture and Nature and this trail in Transylvania offers you the chance to observe fantastic art while walking through some of the prettiest terrain imaginable. (Yes, there are bears.)
The pilgrim path is a 1400 km walking trail through the heart of Romania and each km, there is a hand carved granite stone with bespoke art on each and every marker.
Morgan’s Youtube About the VT Trail Markers
It’s truly the world’s longest art exhibition and a sight to be seen and perfect for a sustainable travel experience.
When I was planning my own trip, I found myself needing help and was lucky enough to receive assistance from the kind people at TĂȘULEASA SOCIAL.
They were incredibly helpful and acted as a self-guided planner, refusing payment and instead requesting a donation to the NGO that built the trail, Via Transilvanica.
The organization has gone on to win the European Heritage Awards due to the incredible work they are doing with rural tourism and volunteerism.
What are the Via Transilvanica Trail Markers?
Each trail marker is 1 meter high and set in concrete next to the trail.
Our friends walked a 3 day section near Bucovina and I was lucky enough to get some photos that I will share here.
Hopefully you can enjoy a wonderful hiking vacation in Transilvania one day.
We absolutely loved staying at the HQ for the Via Transilvanica. The campus is really cute and they educate you on the purpose behind this vast project.
We stayed in local pensions. The comfort level was quite high in my opinion.
It was such a personal trip. It’s like a window into a time gone by.
It was surreal watching farmers hand cut hay and stack it into traditional pole centered hay piles.
The food and hospitality are fantastic.
And it’s very inexpensive relative to other pilgrim paths like the Camino de Santiago.
You’ll walk through villages and see wooden houses and modern ones too.
People really take care of their yards here.
The fields are filled with wildflowers. The “hay” is actually a lot of wildflowers not just grasses.
There’s a story behind each sculpture.
This might be my favorite one. Too hard to tell.
