Additionally, the restaurant next door offers delicious food and drinks, and you can also use their toilets. However, finding a parking space in this area can be a challenge, and it’s better to pay for the 5€ day ticket car park rather than struggling to find a free spot.

Praia das Lages

Praia das Lages is a hidden gem on the north coast of Madeira that I stumbled upon accidentally, and I’m so glad I did! While there are no lifeguards on duty, the entrance is free, making it a popular spot for romantics and those seeking a wild beach experience. The waves here can get quite big, so it’s important to be careful while swimming.

There is a small bar/restaurant right on the beach, and a natural pool nearby where you can swim. If you want to capture beautiful photos or videos, it’s best to arrive at dawn at around 8 am when the beach is completely empty.

You’ll also notice many fishermen here, which is a testament to the quality of fish in this area.

The only downside is the wind which can be quite strong at times. The island offers stunning landscapes and good food with great service. It’s definitely worth taking a day trip or even staying longer to explore the beach and the island.

Best Sandy Beaches Madeira

The beach is divided by a pier into two halves, each with its own unique features including the width of the beach, the type of sand, and the size of the waves.

Despite its beauty, the beach is almost deserted and provides a perfect temperature for swimming, even in November. I cycled along the beach twice and went swimming in several places.

The island experiences occasional rainfall, particularly in the winter months from November to February, but it is usually brief and followed by sunshine. Madeira’s lush greenery and beautiful flora are due to the rainfall and high humidity levels.

When you get back to the mainland Portugal, one of the best coastal trails in the world is the Fisherman’s Trail on mainland Portugal. From Lisbon, it’s about a 2.5 hour drive to get to the trailhead in Porto Covo.

You can easily do a one day stop and hike along my favorite part, the Zambujeira cliffs or you can embark on a 4 day inn-to-inn hike. It’s much less steep than Madeira and offers incredible ambiance and food.
