The white limestone spires remind me just a little bit of the Dolomites. Don’t be fooled, the Carpathians may be covered in ancient pine forests, but the trails are no joke!

Author’s tl;dr: This surprisingly challenging 7.8-mile (12.5 km) out and back trail is popular among Romanian hikers for its breathtaking scenery and diverse landscape. You’ll encounter other hikers along the way, making it a lively and social journey.

Dog friendly, kid-friendly 6+. If your kids don’t like elevation gain, you’ll have to carry them, it’s steep!

If you want to make a weekend of it, you can stay directly on trail at Hotel Bistrita.

❌ Do not do this hike if you hate going uphill. There’s 3,450 ft in elevation gain (1050 meters).

  • What I really loved were the views from the peak and due to the popularity there’s no bears (always be careful though in Romania and be loud).
  • What I thought was rough was the lack of off-piste accessibility for people to pee in the woods.

Every time I go to Romania, the light is so sweet.

What makes the Toaca Vârful hike even more appealing is its variety. The trail offers everything from dense forests to open fields, all leading to the majestic Vârful Toaca peak.

I was surprised to find such amazing facilities on the mountain with delish food and a cute decor.

There are multiple routes to ascend Vârful Toaca. This blog is about the popular trail that starts from the town of Durau where there are plenty of restaurants and an alpine slide.

Alpine slides, jumpy places and food for the kids after the hike. It was good bribery.

The trail surfaces here are a mix of soft dirt, pine tree roots, and some stony areas but not much.

This part of the trail is mostly shaded, starting from the free parking lot in Durau. It starts off with a steep bang walking up muddy tree roots.

This is the hardest part of the trail in my opinion.

Another route to consider is the Izvorul Muntelui – Vf. Toaca trail. This trail also provides a challenging climb, taking approximately 3 to 4 hours to reach Cabana Dochia, where you can take a break before continuing to the peak.

Both paths are well-marked and offer unique experiences. Make sure to carry enough water and wear sturdy hiking boots, as parts of the trails can be rugged.

the peak…always looming and when you think you’re close..think again.

Now the trail is softer and has more amazing views to the white limestone peaks and over Lake Bicaz.

The final ascent is metal stairs, 519 of them!

The series of stairs near the top, known as the “scarile de pe Vf. Toaca,” which provide a unique ascent and make for great photo opportunities. These stairs are a popular attraction and often a favorite part of the hike for many visitors.

They are not scary for people afraid of heights.

Views and Landmarks at Vârful Toaca
