7 Best Waterproof Socks for Hiking

When shopping for waterproof socks, one must consider the material, breathability, level of waterproof protection, and sock height to ensure the best fit and performance.

1. Best Ultralight: Showers Pass Crosspoint Ultralight Waterproof Socks

Showers Pass Crosspoint Ultralight Waterproof Socks

I highly recommend these socks for anyone in need of waterproof gear, especially for hiking and hunting enthusiasts.

Pros

  • Exceptional waterproof qualities
  • Comfortable and breathable
  • Durable materials and construction

Cons

  • Lighter weight may not suit extreme cold conditions
  • Slightly higher price point
  • Limited color options

I couldn’t help but appreciate the Showers Pass Crosspoint Ultralight Waterproof Socks. They not only kept my feet dry in wet conditions but also provided a bit of breathability throughout the day.

Constructed from a blend of merino wool, acrylic, polyester, and nylon, these socks offer the perfect balance of insulation and moisture-wicking properties. The outer layer is made of nylon, Lycra, and Spandex, which makes them durable and stretchy. I was particularly impressed by the terry-loop cushioned, reinforced toe, which added to the overall comfort and support.

Despite their lighter weight and thickness compared to other waterproof socks, the Crosspoint Ultralights did not disappoint when it came to keeping my feet dry and warm during my winter hiking trips. However, for those looking to venture into extremely cold conditions, these may not be the ideal choice.

The slightly higher price point may discourage some buyers, but I believe it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone in need of waterproof socks for hiking and hunting endeavors. The limited color options may not cater to everyone’s preferences, but the performance and comfort these socks offer make up for that minor drawback.

2. Best Sock for Warm Weather

SEALSKINZ Warm Weather Mid Length Sock

SEALSKINZ Sock

These socks are fantastic for outdoor activities in warm weather, offering waterproofing and comfort.

Pros

  • Waterproof, three-layer construction
  • Comfortable Merino wool lining
  • Four-way stretch for a snug fit

Cons

  • Sizing issues reported
  • Not ideal for colder weather
  • May not be suitable for all activities

I recently tried the SEALSKINZ Sports and Outdoors Warm Weather Mid-Length Socks during a hike and was really impressed with their performance. The outer layer was made of a mix of materials like polycolon, nylon, and elastane that shielded my feet from water, mud, and dirt, ensuring they remained dry and comfortable.

The inner layer was crafted from merino wool, acrylic, and polyester that provided a soft cushion, and I appreciated how it helped control moisture and insulation. Additionally, the four-way stretch added to the overall fit and comfort, adapting to my foot’s shape without being too tight.

However, be cautious about selecting the right size, as some users have reported issues with sizing. I didn’t have any problems personally, but it’s worth noting. Moreover, as these socks are designed for warm weather use, they might not provide the best insulation in colder climates. For that, you might look for a more heavyweight option.

I found these socks perfect when paired with lightweight waterproof hiking shoes during my outdoor adventures. I also discovered that they worked well with bamboo-based fabric shoes, combining both breathability and protection from water. Just a tip – apply a waterproofing spray to your hiking shoes for added protection.

Best Waterproof Socks for Trekking

While they may not be for everyone, these outstanding socks are perfect for those seeking waterproof protection.

SEALSKINZ Waterproof Trekking Thick Mid Sock

SEALSKINZ Waterproof Socks

I highly recommend these socks for anyone seeking comfortable, waterproof protection during outdoor activities.

Pros

  • Excellent waterproof capabilities
  • Keeps feet warm and dry in various conditions
  • Comfortable fit and feel

Cons

  • A bit heavy when first putting them on
  • Pricey for socks
  • May not be suitable for all foot sizes

I recently had the opportunity to try out the SEALSKINZ Waterproof Trekking Thick Mid Sock while hiking, and I must say, I am quite impressed by their performance. These socks truly kept my feet warm and dry, even during the wettest and coldest conditions. Not only that, but they were also incredibly comfortable while walking long distances.

At first, I noticed the socks felt somewhat heavy, but once I started hiking, that feeling disappeared. They seemed to easily mold to my feet, providing a snug and cozy fit. That being said, they may not be suitable for all foot sizes since they are designed as unisex and can feel a bit odd on smaller feet.

As someone who values dry, comfortable feet while trekking through various terrains, I think these waterproof socks are a worthy investment. However, some may find them a tad expensive for socks. If warmth, comfort, and waterproof capabilities are your priority, then these socks are definitely worth every penny.

Best at Staying Put

RANDY SUN Waterproof Socks

RANDY SUN Waterproof Socks

Stay dry and comfortable on your adventures with these multi-functional waterproof socks.

Pros

  • Excellent waterproof and breathable performance
  • Comfortable fit with non-slip features
  • Versatile for various outdoor activities

Cons

  • Slightly bulkier fit
  • Cuff of the socks is not waterproof
  • May require a larger shoe size

I recently had the chance to try out the RANDY SUN Waterproof Socks while hiking and splashing through creeks. The waterproof feature worked wonders in keeping my feet dry, and their breathability ensured that I stayed comfortable during all my activities. The Coolmax fabric efficiently wicked away sweat, which made a noticeable difference.

Walking along uneven terrain, I appreciated the socks’ non-slip ribbed top, which prevented them from slipping in my shoes. The comfortable cushioning and deep heel cup also minimized abrasions and offered extra blister protection.

However, I had to wear slightly larger shoes with these socks, as they have a bulkier fit. The cuff of the socks isn’t waterproof, so avoid submerging your feet in water past that point. Despite these minor drawbacks, the RANDY SUN Waterproof Socks were perfect for my adventures and performed well in various conditions. As a bonus, they’re even lightweight and wear-resistant.

Best for REALLY cold weather

SEALSKINZ Waterproof Cold Weather Knee Length Socks

SEALSKINZ Waterproof Socks

I highly recommend these socks to keep your feet dry without compromising comfort during outdoor activities.

Pros

  • Completely waterproof and windproof
  • Merino wool lining for moisture control and insulation
  • Zonal elastication for added support

Cons

  • Some may find the fit slightly tight
  • Might feel bulkier than regular socks
  • May lose waterproofness over time and with heavy use

I recently tried the SEALSKINZ Waterproof Cold Weather Knee Length Socks and was pleasantly surprised by their performance. While I was skeptical at first, these socks truly lived up to their claims of being 100% waterproof, windproof, and breathable. Due to their knee-length design and Merino wool lining, my feet stayed warm and dry during a rainy hike, even when passing through several shallow streams.

As for comfort, these socks provided an impressive level of support with their zonal elastication. However, I must admit that the fit was a bit on the tight side, and it took some time to get used to the bulkier feel compared to regular socks.

I found that they provided ample insulation during colder weather, making them an excellent choice for ladies’ waterproof hiking shoes, as well as for anyone searching for affordable waterproof hiking shoes.

While these socks are a fantastic investment for outdoor enthusiasts, I noticed that their waterproofness may decrease over time and with heavy use. Nevertheless, this is expected for any waterproof product subjected to constant exposure to water and harsh conditions.

Most Durable

Fullsheild Men’s Waterproof Hiking Socks

Fullsheild Waterproof Socks

These Fullsheild waterproof socks are definitely worth considering for those who participate in outdoor activities in wet conditions.

Pros

  • Durable and waterproof
  • Comfortable with moisture-wicking material
  • Suitable for various outdoor activities

Cons

  • Slightly thick for some shoes
  • Not designed for extreme cold
  • Hand wash recommended

I recently used these Fullsheild waterproof hiking socks and found them to be quite impressive. The three-layer construction, consisting of a durable nylon outer, breathable waterproof membrane, and moisture-wicking Coolmax lining, kept my feet dry and comfortable during a hike on a rainy day.

However, I must mention that they might be a bit thick for some shoes, so it’s best to pair them with loose-fitting footwear. Despite the thickness, I didn’t feel overly warm or uncomfortable – the breathable membrane does a great job of regulating the temperature inside the sock.

These socks are not just for hiking – they also work well for other outdoor activities such as trail running, fishing, mountain biking, and even skiing. Although I wouldn’t solely rely on them for warmth in extreme cold conditions, they do provide some protection against wind and cold.

Best Value

ArcticDry Waterproof Socks

ArcticDry Waterproof Socks

These ArcticDry Waterproof Socks are a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts who want dry and warm feet in wet and cold conditions.

Pros

  • 100% Waterproof, great for various outdoor activities
  • Thermal and insulated, perfect for cold weather
  • Multi-functional and elasticated fabric, suitable for different sports

Cons

  • Bulky compared to regular socks
  • Not submersible past the ankles
  • May not be suitable for all shoe sizes

I recently tried out these ArcticDry Waterproof Socks, and I have to say they exceeded my expectations. I used them while hiking in wet and snowy conditions, and they were keeping my feet dry and warm throughout the trek. The material is not only waterproof but also insulated, making them perfect for colder weather.

However, I did notice that the socks are bulkier than regular socks. This wasn’t a problem for me, but some people might find it difficult to fit them into tight shoes. Also, they are not designed to be fully submerged in water – so if you’re wading through ankle-deep puddles, your feet might still get wet. Lastly, based on the available size range, they may not fit all foot sizes perfectly.

Buying Guide

Material

As a fellow waterproof sock enthusiast, I believe material plays a significant role in our sock choice. We need socks that are not only waterproof but also comfortable to wear. Look for materials like:

  • Merino wool: It’s not only warm but also moisture-wicking and odor-resistant.
  • Neoprene: This material insulates well and provides a snug fit.
  • Nylon: Durable and lightweight, nylon is perfect for outdoor activities.

Breathability

What I always consider next is breathability. It might keep my feet dry from external water sources, but socks should also prevent sweat from pooling inside. Opt for socks that offer a balance between waterproofness and breathability.

Size and Fit

I cannot stress enough the importance of size and fit. The best waterproof socks can be rendered useless if they do not fit properly. Always check the size chart provided by the manufacturer and ensure your chosen pair has a snug, yet comfortable fit.

Construction

FeatureDescription
Seamless designSocks with seamless construction reduce friction and prevent blisters.
Reinforced zonesLook for socks with added protection in areas like heels, toes, and soles.

It is undeniable that well-constructed socks minimize discomfort and increase durability, which is essential for our waterproof sock experience.

Versatility

As an adventurer, I need my waterproof socks to be versatile. I look for pairs that can be used across a variety of activities, such as hiking, cycling, fishing, or kayaking. Analyze how the sock design fits your needs to maximize your investment.

Now that you know what I keep in mind when looking for waterproof socks, you too can make informed decisions and find the perfect pair for those wet and wild adventures!

What You Need to Know About Hiking Socks That Are Waterproof

👏 High tech socks have multiple layers and special fabrics to repel water and keep your feet warm.

👏 They are very durable.

❌ There’s no such thing as TRULY waterproof socks.

Unless you want to wear neoprene socks for hiking. However, those are very uncomfortable, but needed in certain circumstances. (Alaska, birding, hunting, swamping, Michigan)

❌ They get very heavy after hiking through water and take forever to dry.

❌ Water gets into the upper layer of sock, so while feet aren’t wet they feel cold.

The socks I’m recommending are NOT 100% neoprene and waterproof, but they are doing their best to aid in the non-swamp foot situation. It’s a combination of wool and synthetic blends, some multi-layer (not so easy to adjust) and creative design and some magic I don’t understand.

People with circulation problems like Reynaud’s and need their feet to stay warm on hikes could benefit using waterproof socks.

Final Verdict : to get or not to get?

These make sense for some people in certain circumstances such as extreme cold or wet hikes, or if you are going on a shorter hike and don’t mind the lack of breathability and long time to dry.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Recommended Waterproof Socks

Based on my personal experience of trying out various hiking socks, I recommend the Showers Pass Crosspoint as the best option on the market.

The socks features a fully waterproof experience and they stay put even with day long hikes and provides both warmth and comfort for hiking, biking, hunting and Nature walks.

Alternatives to Waterproof Hiking Socks

But What About Waterproof Boots?

I’ve tried “waterproof boots” and I’ve done the $20 spray to “make my boots more waterproof” and it….kinda helps; but the foot is an ecosystem and you cannot forget the socks. Because once they get wet it doesn’t matter how much you spend on shoes.

Alternative Socks

When it comes to hiking socks, neoprene socks are not the only option available. In fact, there are quite a few other types of hiking socks that are worth considering. Here are a few of the more unusual options:

1. Merino Wool Socks

DANISH ENDURANCE Merino Wool Hiking Socks for Women, Men & Kids, 3 pack (Light Grey, US Women 11-13 // US Men 9.5-12.5)

Merino wool socks are a great alternative to neoprene socks for hiking. They are made from natural fibers that are soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, which means your feet stay dry and comfortable even on long hikes. Merino wool also has natural antibacterial properties, which helps prevent foot odor.

One downside to merino wool socks is that they tend to be more expensive than other types of socks. However, the investment is worth it for the added comfort and durability they provide.

Here’s my favorite Merino Wool Hiking sock on Amazon.

2. Synthetic Blend Socks

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Sock Cushion,Black,Large

Synthetic blend socks are another great alternative to neoprene type socks. They are made from a combination of synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, which are durable and moisture-wicking. Synthetic blend socks are also often treated with antimicrobial agents to help prevent foot odor.

One downside to synthetic blend socks is that they can be less breathable than other types of socks, which can lead to sweaty feet on long hikes. However, many brands have developed advanced synthetic blends that offer improved breathability and comfort.

Overall, both merino wool and synthetic blend socks are great alternatives. They offer superior comfort, moisture-wicking, and antimicrobial properties to keep your feet happy and healthy on the trail.

Why Trust?

At Crave the Planet, I’m all about honest and relatable reviews of outdoor products. As a physical therapist, hut to hut hiker, downhill skier and mom, I’m constantly trying new gear to make my outdoor experiences more comfy and fun but with science in mind.

I’ll be real with you, I don’t do every outdoor activity. But, who does? I’m just a regular person who loves exploring the planet. Perfectionism is my enemy and I hope to help you ditch that vibe too.

My review process involves testing each product in real-life outdoor situations, but if it’s a really horrible day I’ll probably find a hotel in the valley. I’ll let you know what worked for me and what didn’t, so you can make informed decisions about your gear choices.

I don’t do sponsored reviews or take payment for my reviews. All comments are based on my personal experience. Sometimes I’ll test something and then send it back for a refund. Usually there’s a hefty fee. Bummer. So, if you’re looking for a relatable and honest take on outdoor gear, you’re in the right place.

Overall, I think waterproof socks for hiking are rather uncomfy, but have their specific uses for people that need protection for their feetsies in cold and wet places or have some circulation problems (we all will get there eventually). Thankfully we have them!
